The wish for the newly built sacristy to be furnished as appropriate in order to serve the ever increasing requirements, was thus made clear by the Pauline community “che avendo per il proprio commodo fabbricata li sacristia si ritrovo adesso in preciso necesita di fare gli armarji e casse”. It was also deeply felt that without such a construction, the newly built sacristy would have remained incomplete “…per poeter fare la Guardarobba et Armarji sudetti senza la quale l opera restarebbe imperfetta”.
This timely and attentive intervention was not only a means of reverting back the damage suffered through the years but reinstated also the artistic and historic value and dignity of the Kaxxarizzi.
Josef’s approach to his projects was a very scientific one and ensured that he did all the preliminary investigations and studies necessary. He was very cautious in the way he approached the projects... He distinguishes himself from others in his field by taking a very conservation rather than restoration view of the projects and the results are always outstanding.
The presentation given by Josef at the Italian Cultural Institute, in September 2015, entitled “Wood restoration: organ sound-boxes and other wood works” at “The Magic Box”, an event I organise and coordinate every month at the Italian Cultural Institute, went really well. I am sure he will continue to surprise us with more and more projects in the field of wood conservation and restoration and I look forward to working on another project together.
We requested Josef's collaboration for the surveying of organs produced by our firm since its establishment for churches and convents in Malta and Gozo. We relied on his professional expertise and knowledge for the execution of this detailed inventory including the organ's state of preservation.
Wood conservation is in good hands with Josef Aquilina. I had the pleasure of being involved with a number of his projects. His insight into the mechanics of wood conservation and preservation is very, very good, as well as his skills applied to restoration of delicate baroque wood carving.
